Otherwise uninteresting

What is more sad: Setting an alarm clock for noon, or knowing that if one doesn't set an alarm clock for noon, one will sleep far beyond that?

Sleeping is never sad, it is joyous no matter how late it goes. Alarm clocks are evil and make you a slave to your schedule. So I'm going to say the former is more sad (of course, the question was probably rhetorical but whatever, you are sleeping anyway and won't see this for another hour at least. Plus, posting rhetorical questions at 5am is more sad that the two scenarios in the question).

I wasn't trying to hit any buttons. I was just saying that posting rhetorical questions at 5AM is more sad than the other two (neither of which I find particularly sad). So, while it outranks the others on a relative sadness scale, it is still rather low on an absolute sadness scale.

I will acquiesce to your counter argument as I never claimed to be free of the shackles of my evolutionary diurnal bias.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.
